Slarskey LLC Hosts Legal Outreach Summer Interns for a Week of Mock Litigation

This summer, Slarskey LLC was proud to host two rising 10th-grade interns from Legal Outreach’s College Bound program, Brady Boodhram and Eliza Flores. Legal Outreach is a New York-based not-for-profit that prepares students from underserved communities across the city to compete at the highest academic levels, using intensive legal and educational programming as a catalyst for achievement.

Over four days at the firm, the interns got a taste of daily life at a litigation boutique and immersed themselves in the work of commercial litigators, litigating a mock case involving a breach of contract dispute between a large social media conglomerate and an influencer — precisely the kind of high-stakes commercial dispute that the firm handles for its clients every day. Working the case from intake through dispositive motion practice, the interns developed case theories, met with their "clients," and mapped litigation strategy alongside the firm's attorneys.

Early in the week, the interns participated in a settlement conference, with Partner Evan Fried serving as magistrate, where they negotiated on behalf of their respective clients and experienced firsthand how skilled advocates evaluate risk and leverage in pursuit of resolution. When the case could not be resolved, it proceeded to motion practice: each intern researched, wrote, and submitted a brief on a motion to dismiss, and the week culminated in oral argument on the motion before a panel of judges: Partners David Slarskey, Renee Bea, and Adam Hollander.

Along the way, the interns received a full introduction to the practice of law at a litigation boutique, including presentations from the firm's attorneys on the lifecycle of a New York litigation, courtroom objections, the firm's pro bono practice, and the operations and challenges of running a successful small firm. Between the mock case and these sessions, the interns saw the full arc of what commercial litigators do, from contract interpretation and case assessment through briefing and oral advocacy.

The firm is proud to partner with Legal Outreach and all involved were appreciative of the opportunity to work with two talented students who impressed everyone with their hard work and week of outstanding advocacy. We look forward to following their bright futures, and to continuing the program by working with more interns in summers to come.
