Slarskey LLC is pleased to announce a complete victory in its first pro bono case under the firm’s newly formalized Pro Bono Program. This case involved the successful appeal of a single mother, against an unjustified listing in the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR), a designation that could have severely impacted her ability to support her family.

The SCR receives allegations of child neglect through phone calls to its hotline, 24 hours a day. Anyone is eligible to make a report to the SCR. As a result, the SCR listing process sometimes imposes harsh consequences on individuals, labeling them as abusive or neglectful without a proper adjudication of the facts. In such cases, being placed on the SCR can result in devastating impacts on employment, housing, and even family unity. Our client, who had recently graduated college and joined the medical field, faced the possibility of significant professional and personal setbacks due to her inclusion on this registry.

Slarskey LLC took on the case pro bono and provided strategic counsel, ensuring that the client was fully supported throughout the process.

Thanks to these efforts, the case was settled entirely in our client’s favor, leading to the removal of the client’s “indicated status” from the SCR. This outcome is consistent with fairness and permits the client to continue to grow in her career and provide for her children, without the shadow of the unjust listing hanging over her.

Slarskey LLC is excited to grow our recently launched Pro Bono Program and assist more clients who face challenges in their pursuit of justice.

We thank our community partners at New York County Lawyers Association for their referral and support on this matter. For more information about Slarskey LLC’s Pro Bono Program, please visit Slarskey.com/pro-bono.
